Charlie Beckwith was born January 22nd, 1929. He commanded Project Delta in Vietnam and was the first commanding officer of 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment - Delta. In 1962, following a tour with the SAS, Beckwith wrote a paper proposing the U.S. Army create a counterterrorist unit based on his experience with the 22 Special Air Service. In late 1975, following a string of terrorist attacks in Europe he was asked to dig that paper out for a meeting in Washington. Then, at an August 1976 conference at Fort Benning, Georgia, a plan to establish what would become one of the most elite counterterrorist units in the world began to take shape.
